2019 CTZN Zinfandel

2019 CTZN Zinfandel

Planted about 30 years after ZinStar (around 1960) this vineyard is planted on original St. George rootstock, which has a long history in California and dry-farmed vineyards. Known for avoiding drought due to its long, deep root system, it also produces vigorous and broad vines. As we have watched this vineyard age and develop over the past 41 years our goal has been to encourage it to produce more balanced vines and less aggressive growth. With the release of the 2018 vintage, we are able to see how this more mature and balanced vineyard is now able to produce wines which reflect these same qualities. This vineyard is full of promise and just beginning to show its potential.

Each year we thin aggressively in the vineyard to encourage smaller yields and concentration and uniformity of flavors. The vineyard’s youth and vigor produce thick-skinned, large, loose grape clusters. This larger and bolder wine seems best fit for American Oak and we use about 25% new oak barrels with each vintage. Currently, we produce about 2.5 tons of fruit for C’T’Z’N (about 6 barrels) that will rest alongside ZinStar in the Chai each year for 12-18 months.
